Steamatic Brimbank was engaged to remediate a property in Reservoir that had been maliciously damaged and contaminated as a result of a suspected clandestine drug lab. The site was littered with rubbish, contents, and unknown substances. Initial testing confirmed the presence of methamphetamine contamination throughout the home. Our team was tasked with the safe removal of hazardous materials and full decontamination of the premises.

The Challenge

  • The property had suffered severe malicious damage, with extensive contents and debris left behind by former tenants.

  • Unknown fluids and substances were present throughout the premises, posing potential chemical and biological risks to our technicians.

  • Due to the confirmed presence of methamphetamine contamination, the site was treated as high-risk for sharps and hazardous waste.

  • Before any decontamination could begin, all contents and rubbish had to be safely removed in accordance with health and safety protocols.

  • Strict safety measures were required to mitigate risks to personnel and ensure the integrity of the decontamination process.

Our Solution

  • Our first priority was the health and safety of our technicians and the surrounding community. Comprehensive risk assessments were conducted, and a dedicated site supervisor briefed all team members.

  • All personnel were equipped with full PPE, including respirators, disposable coveralls, and puncture-resistant gloves.

  • A skip bin was delivered to the site to ensure safe and immediate disposal of contaminated contents, minimising handling and transportation risks.

  • Once the property was cleared of debris and potential hazards, our certified decontamination technicians commenced methamphetamine remediation following a detailed scope provided by our project managers and hygienists.

  • The remediation process included:

Safe removal and disposal of non-salvageable items.

    Detailed cleaning and surface neutralisation.

Application of a specialised chemical fog treatment to eliminate residual contamination.

  • Upon completion, an independent third-party hygienist performed a comprehensive Post-Remedial Verification (PRV) to confirm the property met required clearance levels and industry standards.

Outcome
The project was delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory standards. The Reservoir property was successfully restored to a safe and habitable condition, providing peace of mind for the property owner and ensuring the well-being of future occupants.
